NORMAN — Police are investigating the death of a man who was to go to trial this week on a negligent-homicide charge.

Michael Phelps Barfield, 54, was found dead Monday by police at his Norman home.

Police would not comment on a cause of death.

Barfield had been scheduled to go on trial this week after the death of Oklahoma City defense attorney Robert Edward Manchester.

Manchester, 69, of Norman died June 3 when a pickup Barfield was accused of driving crashed into Manchester's car.

According to police, Manchester's car caught fire. Barfield fled in a police cruiser. Barfield's attorney, D.C. Thomas, said several calls to Barfield during the weekend were unreturned. "It was very unusual for him not to return calls,” Thomas said.
